How to Shop Smart for Used Motorcycles

If you're in the market for a motorcycle, you may find that you simply cannot afford a brand new one. There is a solution, and it's buying used. The first thing you should definitely do is figure out what kind of bike you're looking for. There are cruisers, sport bikes, touring bikes, street bikes and off-road bikes. Once you know what you're shopping for, you'll need to know where to look. There are various places where you can purchase used motorcycles of all types.

One way to buy a used bike is to go directly to the previous owner. Check your local newspaper classifieds and pennysaver paper advertisements to find listings for used bikes. Sometimes the price will be listed in the ad, other times you'll have to call to find out. It helps if you know a bit about motorcycles if you plan to buy directly from an owner. After all, a novice may not be able to distinguish if they're getting a good deal, or if the bike is in prime condition. One of the downsides of buying a motorcycle from a previous owner is that you're usually buying as is. This means that if there's a problem, you're stuck with it.

Another place to buy a used bike is from a dealership. For example, you can buy used from Harley Davidson dealerships, Suzuki dealerships and Yamaha dealerships, to name a few. Sometimes these bikes are offered as is, sometimes they come with warranty protection. One benefit of buying used from a dealership is the likelihood of financing plans. If you don't have cash up front, this may be your only option of getting the bike you want. Selection is another benefit of buying this way. You can see several bikes at one place rather than visiting a bunch of different owners selling their used bikes.

If you're knowledgeable about motorcycles, one way to get a good price on a used one is to buy at auction. This may include police auctions, estate sales, or impound lot auctions. Many vehicle dealers obtain their inventory in just this way. You'll usually be able to find out more about the bike before the auction begins. Bidding at auction can get tricky so make sure you're well prepared and know how high you're willing to go.

Used motorcycles can be just as good as brand new ones, and a lot cheaper. With a little comparison shopping and basic knowledge about motorcycles, you can find the perfect used bike that will fulfill all your needs and get you happily on the road in no time!
