A Beginner's Guide to Pocket Bikes

Pocket bikes are sometimes known as mini bikes or even pocket rockets. These tiny motorcycles are designed for use on a race track but often ridden in places they shouldn't be -- like the street. In some states and cities, such as New York City, these bikes are illegal. Other places require they only be ridden on approved race tracks and courses.

Both concerned parents and law enforcement agents everywhere are concerned about the safety of today's youth where these bikes are concerned. Believe it or not, these little speed machines can go up to or even faster than forty miles per hour. Because of their small size, it's sometimes hard for a motorist to see one of these bikes whizzing down the road. If you're a parent whose child is begging for a mini bike, you'd be better off getting them a name brand dirt bike and taking them to a training facility for a certified course in dirt bike operation and safety.

If you're an adult who plans to ride a mini bike in an approved location with the proper safety equipment, then that is of course your decision. You can purchase a mini bike for as little as a few hundred dollars or as much as several thousand dollars. Some of these types of bikes run on electric motors, others take gas. If you do end up purchasing one of these bikes, make sure you also get the right safety equipment, including a helmet. Ideally, choose a helmet that is not only DOT certified but also certified by the Snell foundation. The Snell foundation exists to certify and test helmets to provide the public with the safest head protection possible. It's advisable to discard your helmet after a few years and buy a new one because of the continuing innovations in helmet technology and safety.

Pocket bikes are tiny, fast and potentially very dangerous. This is why anyone considering buying one should think long and hard before shelling out money for one of these machines. There are lots of other types of bikes for riders seeking adventure, including motocross bikes, sport bikes, and off-road bikes made by trusted names like Honda, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Yamaha. Regardless of what kind of bike you choose, make sure you follow all legal and safety requirements as designated by your local government.
