What Kind of Motorcycle Insurance Should You Choose?

If you are a motorcycle rider, or plan to be one, then you will need motorcycle insurance. You may be a very safe cyclist, but you simply cannot predict that everyone on the road around you is just as attentive. There are many different types of insurance policy choices out there from which you can choose. In this article, you will learn more about the types of insurance available so that you can make an educated choice when you visit your agent.

Bodily Injury and Property Damage Liability: This type of insurance is designed to protect you legally in the event that you are involved in an accident that is your fault. Your policy will take care of medical expenses and property damage for the other party, up to the limit of your policy. Policies of this type are defined by a numerical formula. For example, a 10/20/5 policy means a limit of $10,000 would be paid per person for injury, $20,000 per accident for bodily injury, and $5,000 per accident for property damage costs.

Collision and Comprehensive: Collision coverage will cover the cost of property damage to your bike if you are involved in a collision. For this type of coverage, it doesn't matter whose fault the collision is. To keep premiums affordable, choose the largest deductible that you can afford to pay. Comprehensive coverage covers the cost of damage due to a natural disaster, vandalism, or theft.

Medical Coverage: Medical coverage is self-explanatory -- it covers your medical expenses if you are involved in a motorcycle accident. Like collision and comprehensive, it doesn't matter who is at fault for the expenses to be covered. This type of coverage often has limitations for the medical expense payments, usually around three years after the date of the accident.

Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage: If you are involved in an accident that is the fault of an uninsured or underinsured motorist, this type of insurance will cover your medical expenses and lost wages because the other party does not have enough insurance to do so.

Roadside Assistance: If your bike breaks down on the side of the road, roadside assistance covers the cost of a tow truck and transportation. Sometimes it also covers the cost of repairs, and is available twenty-four hours a day.
