What You Should Know About Motorcycle Helmets

Motorcycle helmets are not an unattractive inconvenience for motorcycle riders, they are lifesaving necessities. After all, head injury is the leading cause of death when it comes to motorcycle accidents. By protecting your head with a helmet, you can significantly increase your safety and decrease the likelihood of a life-threatening head injury if you are involved in an accident. In some states, it is the law to wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle. In other states, it is the decision of an adult rider whether or not they wear a helmet.

Not only can helmets protect the head, they can protect the eyes and face as well. Believe it or not, head injury is not the only risk you undertake when you ride without a helmet. Debris, and even insects, can hit your face and eyes. If you're going 80 miles an hour, this can be a potential disaster that you'd be better off to avoid. Head protection has come a long way through the years. Because of the recent innovations and continuing technology, always choose a helmet that is less than five years old.

You will also want to choose one that is certified by the Snell Foundation. This foundation is a not for profit organization that tests and certifies protective head gear for bike and motorcycle riders. This foundation was created when William Snell died in 1956 from head injuries sustained in an auto accident. At the time of the accident, Snell was wearing a leather helmet -- not much protection! Had Snell been wearing a better helmet, it's possible he would have survived. Because of this, the friends and family members of the late William Snell then created the foundation, which has been instrumental in the testing and development of effective head protection.

Even better is to find a helmet that is both Snell and DOT (Department of Transportation) certified. This ensures that your head is being protected by a piece of equipment that has stood up under rigorous testing from two trusted establishments and offers the highest level of protection available. When shopping for motorcycle helmets, make sure to choose the proper size. Try the helmet on before leaving the store. The helmet should fit snugly and feel comfortable. Good places to purchase head protection would be anywhere that sells motorcycles and/or motorcycle accessories.
